News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 1/26/12

Hola!

Let me just say that I have been busy working on ideas for community and gathering. And the more I get into it, the more possibility I see for what can happen. It's a crazy time in my head right now, but I'm having a blast!

All this discussion of what to do about events at Hi Point and encouraging people to use Hi Point as a venue for their interests has lead me to think more seriously about my interests are, as well. For those who don't know me well, let me warn you that I'm my interests are flung far afield and perhaps eccentric, at times. You'll see as you scroll down, evidence of said interests! Hopefully you would like to participate and if you think I'm crazy and you'd like to do something else, by all means let me know what your passions and interests are and we'll come up with a way to create an event centered on creating community around you.

What makes community building at Hi Point so much fun are the great people we get to serve every day! BTW, that means you. :) I have met so many people who have taught me about their perspectives and knowings about this world, I have been compelled to ask some of them to come and share with all of us some of what they have given me. I do have the best job in the world, since I get to meet the people in our community who have so much to give and share. Some of these people are involved in upcoming events, but I know there's so much more that we can do and so many more folks with wisdom or enthusiasm to share. I'm busy imagining new events and ways to gather every day, so if even the smallest thought comes into your head, tell me about it. I probably know someone who is thinking similarly to you and would love to meet you and share in your idea together. Why not?

In the meantime, there's tons of stuff going on. Please read through and come participate in the events that we have coming up! For those of you who are wondering about future music events, we are working on it, but nothing solid yet.

Thanks for everything you do and I hope to see you soon!

Energy / Meridian Workshop for Health and Stress Reduction!

Energy Healing/Meridian Workshop
Wednesday February 1st, 7:15-8:30pm

I'm super excited about this class. Mike is one of my favorite people and has already taught me so much about tapping (and life in general!), which is the healing modality he'll be sharing. Tapping is a means of combining meridians (think accupuncture) and psychology to help you to improve your emotional state, your health and the health of your loved ones. It's a powerful technique that can transform your life and it's Mike's loving work to share this with us.

Please email me asap with your interest. We're limiting the workshop to ten to maximize group learning, so commit early!

Herbal tea and Hi Point's awesome cookies will be provided.
In keeping with the spirit of giving, we are not charging for the class or refreshments, but are gratefully accepting your cash offering for the value you feel this class brings to you.

Movie Night

We'll be watching and discussing a movie every first Monday of the month! Which movie? We're considering our options. Some suggestions were Annie Hall, Marx Brothers, Dr. Strangelove, Sound of Music, Midnight in Paris and probably some others I've spaced on. You've got some time before we decide on this month's movie. We'll be putting a suggestion box at Hi Point for you to add your ideas, too! Or you can always email me. :)

Healing practicioners from Steamboat Hot Springs will be at Hi Point to share in new approaches to alternative and energetic healing. I'll have more details as we get closer. However, I do know that they will be offering aura pictures and analysis, chair massages, as well as information on healing through crystals, essential oils, and bath salts. Plus, they'll be providing a mini (1/2 hour) seminar on healing with color, light and sound at 3:00pm. More news on this to come! I can't wait to compare aura pictures!

Game night!
We did game night a couple weeks ago and had a lot of fun. The big question is...game night once a month or every week. I'd really like your feedback on that question. Email me, please! :)

Yoga Class at Hi Point!

Monday, January 16th 5:30pm - 6:45pm
Wednesday, January 17th 5:30pm - 6:45pm
Yoga Monday and Wednesday nights. Bring your mat! Class is a $7 donation to Jelena.

jelenahardy@gmail.com or 530.321.2886

Jelena's style of yoga is a dynamic flowing practice that allows the internal movement of the breath to carry the external movement of the body. As the life force (prana) is intensified and stilled, the physical practice becomes a dynamic form of meditation. Challenging the body and mind to find a balance between effort and receptivity imbues the physical practice with lightness and grace and maximizes one's power of conscious manifestation. This process of self-realization and unity with the divine is the essence of yoga.

Painting!

If you haven't noticed, we've been working on selecting a color to paint our large (East) wall to better off-set the art and just to add a little pizzazz. After two months deliberation, we've come up with a really, super cool idea. I think it's super cool, anyway. I don't wanna say here though, 'cause it sounds really wild and you'll wanna talk me out of it. Not gonna happen! But, while we're getting ready to paint, we'll be spackling, taping etc. Not fun. But, the fun part is we'll have permanent markers available for you to come tag the wall before painting! You've got a week! We'll be starting to paint February 3rd starting at 5pm, which we're doing as a painting party. If you're inspired to come help, you'll be totally welcome. There'll be chili and beer for the painters and it'll be a good time. One person's dreaded chore becomes a party, if you add friends, food and beer, right? It's a total miracle! :)

New Activities at Hi Point!

OK, folks...lots of new stuff to do!

2012 Interest Group
Sunday February 5th, 2pm
I'm curious about the whole question of what's reallly going on in 2012 and I know I'm not the only one! I'd like to get together a group of people who'd like to engage in the question of what the real deal is about 2012. There's so much information out there, so I thought it'd be fun to gather some folks who'd like to decide how to go about learning about 2012. There's documentaries, book, websites, and tons of people who say they know exactly what's going on. Too much for one brain to synthesize, if you ask me. Too much for my brain, anyway! So, how about we gather, share ideas, ask questions, and decide how to best learn with real people instead of internet chat rooms trolls. Ah, what a novel idea!

Middle East Interest Group
I'm also totally interested in the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There are a handful of you in the Hi Point community who have some real insight and experience to share on this subject and I (with the sage guidance of one of those someones) have decided to approach the subject through reading and discussing a novel called "The Damascus Gate" by Robert Stone. It is a thriller of sorts, but most importantly paints an accurate picture of the layers of history, religion and culture that set into motion the conflict as it is today. I think this is a wonderful approach to begin to understand to the complexities of this conflict and to begin a conversation about the Middle East and what really drives our (American) policy.

Now, don't worry. I'm not the intellectual fire that will bring this book to life for us. That is the glory of my role, though. I know people who know far more than your average bear and who are willing to have a conversation that will rock your brain in your skull. So, if you find this subject interesting, get the book, get to reading and we'll set a date to discuss. And then we'll see where our interest take us.

New Book Club Book!
We've taken a book club hiatus, but we've selected a new book to read. Several of us have decided the book of choice this time around is "In the Garden of Beasts" by Eric
Larson. It's written by the same guy who wrote "Devil in the White City", which was a fascinating read about the Chicago World's Fair and a mass murderer operating within the chaos of Chicago during that time. In the Garden of Beasts is a narrative non-ficiton, which means it reads like a novel but is in fact non-fiction. This current selection is about the American ambassador and his family in Nazi Germany in 1933. He witnesses the rise of fascism and calls the alarm while the US State Department is largely ignoring or underplaying the threat. It's a fascinating point in history written by a master.

Meeting is set for Sunday February 26th, 1pm
