News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 03/31/2010

Ok folks, it's official that time flies, because we're talking about Easter today! At least the snow has melted from this morning, but it's still hard for me to believe that Spring is upon us. The big news is we're doing a special brunch for Easter this weekend. Check out the menu! Also, the Acoustic Grind is going on this weekend, plus our first open mic event run by our very own Jonie Blinman. Also, one more Sunday til book club time, so I hope you've picked up your copy of The Geography of Bliss!

Thanks!

Acoustic Grind

This week at the Acoustic Grind is Tyler Stafford. You can hear some of his music at  http://www.myspace.com/tylerstaffordmusic. Tyler's played the Acoustic Grind before and is one of my favorite artists to play so far!
Open Mic
Following the Acoustic Grind, Hi Point is doing our first open mic event. Sign ups are during the Acoustic Grind and the lineup is chosen by lottery. This is an all ages show and we invite musicians, poets or whatever kind of art that can be shared with a mic. Come share your talents with our community!

News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 03/29/2010

Hello, all! Here's your news update! We decided on a new organic espresso roast though it's gonna take a couple weeks for our roaster to get the green beans delivered. I'll let you know when it arrives, but for now I can tell you, it is delicious! We have switched our decaf already to an organic, water-processed bean and it is also very tasty.

I'm also seriously looking into how to transition Hi Point into a more local-aware place. More than we are already, I mean. I'm looking into getting local farm eggs for our breakfasts, relatively local flour for our baking, local produce whenever possible, etc. I'll let you know about these changes as they arrive but I am excited about exploring the food opportunities in Nevada and the Sierras.

There's so much more to say, but I'll show some restraint and just say thanks for all you do and I hope to see you soon!

Thanks!

The Grups
This weekend we have the Grups coming to play! I'm pretty excited since I've known one of the band members for many years and I know what a dedicated and talented musician he is, so I can only anticipate how great Doyle's band is. Very cool. Please come listen and enjoy a relaxing Saturday afternoon with us! The Grups play this Saturday 1:30 to 3:30pm.
Spring Drinks
We had some fun coming up with some spring drinks for y'all. Some of you already know the Cherry Blossom and how fab it is! Cherry and white chocolate-ly goodness. :) We also have the Bunny Hop mocha with coconut and white chocolate.  Next is the Peeping Chai Latte with marshmallow and chai in honor of Peeps season, aka Easter. It sounds funky, but it sure is tasty. Last, but not least, is the Raspberry Jelly Bean which is raspberry and white mocha. Yay for Spring!!

Digital Photography Class
Our first photography class with Ian was a lot of fun. I'm hopeless with my little camera, but even I felt much more empowered and competent after one class. I'm excited to go to the next class, which is set for this Sunday at 1pm to 3pm. Even if you didn't come to the first, you can come join us at any time and jump in the fun. Ian is a professional teacher and photographer, so this is a pure treat for us!

Easter Brunch
It's hard to believe, but Easter is almost here. Save the date, 'cause we'll be doing a special Easter brunch on Sunday April 4th! I haven't decided the menu yet, but keep it in mind for your Easter Sunday. I'm thinking something along the lines of fresh scones with warm brie
, roasted asparagus, smoked salmon something, etc. You get the idea, I hope. Extra yummy goodness to celebrate spring!

New Groups?
I'm interested in getting some new groups started at Hi Point. Anyone interested in veggie garden
ing? I know that idea has been considered before mid winter, but this is the time! How about a group bicycle ride, mountain or road? If you're interested in starting something like this, we'll help build the group and treat you to free coffee for being the group leader/facilitator. Let me know what you'd like to do and let's make it happen! Email me (Sarah) or leave me a message at the shop with one of the staff members.

News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 3/17/10

What's new, you ask? Well, more espresso tasting today. Woo-hoo! The digital photography class is this coming Sunday with Ian. That will be great, since he really is both an artist and a great technician, as photographers must be. So, come with your camera questions, lighting, composition, etc. He's ready to guide you to taking great pictures. The music goes on this weekend, as usual, with a new artist from Carson City. Plus, I forgot to mention last week all the tasty Irish-inspired coffee drinks we're doing at the shop. We'll have them for a few more days before the next crop of spring-inspired drinks comes along. Hope to see you soon!

Thanks!

Acoustic Grind
This Saturday we have Frankie Ferreria playing for us. You can listen to his music athttp://www.myspace.com/frankieferreira. Frankie's from Carson City and has some great songs he's written and I'm looking forward to hearing him live. Great voice!
St. Patty's Drink Specials
Sadly, we can't pour whiskey today, but we can serve the next best thing. Espresso! The Pot O' Gold latte - vanilla and Caramel latte
The Irish Car Bomb - Irish Cream mocha plus 2 extra shots
The Lucky Charm  - White Chocolate and Irish Cream
The Nutty Irishman - Hazelnut and Irish cream
I think the winner of of the Irish inspired drinks thus far has been the Car Bomb, though I'm feeling apologetic for the name. The war in Northern Ireland has been over for quite some time, so it's time to come up with a new name for this one, so if anyone is inspired with a good, but less reminiscent of a sad chapter in Ireland's history, let me know! it's a good drink, so I wanna keep it around. Thoughts, anyone?

Digital Photography Class
This one is exciting! Ian, a fellow Hi Pointer, is a fabulous professional photographer and has offered to teach a class or two on digital photography. The first class will be Sunday March 21st, 1-3pm. This class is not just for artists, but anyone who is interested in taking great pictures. Ian teaches professionally for Nikon and even had Clint Eastwood in a class once, so this class is a wonderful gift to the community. Don't miss out on this one!

Bookclub Time
The bookclub was great again. Thanks, Paul! Our next book is
"The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World"
It's a look at what it means to be happy. Our focus in the bookclub thus far has been an examination in priorities in our lives and how to live more authentic, practical and happy lives. The club meets April 11th, 3-5pm. A couple of our customers have said that they've already read this one and thought it was just great! So, get the book, read up and come join us!

News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 3/11/2010

News? Let's see. Espresso tasting continues today. My tolerance of caffeine is going sky-high! We have a new digital photography class starting up next Sunday, which is very cool. The new bookclub book has been selected. Carissa Warman is singing for us this Saturday and, of course, a totally fun new open mic starts this Saturday, too. The knitting circle is this Sunday. And the breakfast special in honor of St. Patricks Day is Green Eggs and Ham - eggs scrambled with spinach, goat cheese and proscuitto. Thanks to Lori for the idea. :) Overall, good times! Hope to see you soon!

Acoustic Grind
This Saturday we have Carissa Warman, who has played the Acoustic Grind before. She's a great pianist and vocalist with her own work to share with you. Check out her music athttp://www.myspace.com/carissawarman. As always, the Grind is from 1:30-3:30pm. Also, this week we're starting an open mic at 3:30, immediately following the Grind. Come and share your talents with us! Poets, rappers, musicians and performers of all stripes are welcome!

Knitter's Circle
It's time again for the knitting circle. Please come bring your needles or perhaps just your interest to Hi Point's knitting circle this Sunday March 14th 3-5pm!

Scrabble - it's on!
I confused a few folks about how to participate in the Scrabble smackdown going on this month. Here's the deal-io. Come play Scrabble anytime this month at Hi Point Cafe and record your scores with us (we have a running tally). The top 4 scoring people will compete for the championship and the winner of that event (TBA) will win a free drink a day for a month from Hi Point! Cool, huh? I hope that's a touch more clear and I hope to see you come play!

News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 3/4/2010

I can't believe another week has flown by already! News for this week... competition Scrabble play is underway, bookcrossers are gathering on Saturday, the bookclub on Sunday and music on Saturday, as always! Thanks for being one of our fabulous customers and hope to see you soon. :)

Acoustic Grind
This Saturday we have Phil Prunier, a wonderful guitarist/singer who has a delightful style and sound. He doesn't have a website to check him out in advance, but I heard him play before and he's a joy to listen to. Please come join us 1:30 to 3:30 on Saturday!
Focus on Coffee
Organic Espresso!
The consensus is shaping up to support organic in the shop, so that's exciting. I'm glad to hear that so many of you find organic to be an important choice and now that I've heard from so many folks, we'll look at getting more of our coffees to be organic...and still as tasty as possible. Thanks for the feedback!

Bookclub Time
The bookclub is meeting this Sunday at 3pm! We'll be discussing the book "Your Life or Your Money" by Vicki Robin, et al. I just bought the book myself (yes, I'm a slacker but I read fast!) so if you'd still like to join us, but have yet to read it, you aren't alone. The discussion last time was fascinating and I loved the group who gathered. I can't wait to hear what comes up this time, because I know it'll be an interesting and thoughtful discussion. Please come join us!

Scrabble Time!
OK, here's the skinny on the Scrabble fest. Every month, we'll gather all the names and scores of the Scrabble games played in the shop. The top four players will play a final round to get our final winner. And the final winner wins a free coffee a day for a month! All you have to do is agree to use the common dictionary and play by the rules, of course, though we're not enforcing time limits. The first game of official competition has already been played, so come, play and get included in the running for March!

Bookcrossing
Hi Point Coffee and Cafe is an official bookcrossing site for people who love to share books for free. We will be hosting a club of bookcrossers March 6th, 11-1pm. If you're curious of how to get started in your adventures in bookcrossing, come join us! You can go to http://www.bookcrossing.com/ to learn more about bookcrossing.
