Hello, all! I've been thinking about writing my newsletter all week, with all these grand ideas of things to share. Of course, I did not write these things down. Thankfully, I could not forget the baby parade of the past week, which is a wonderful thing to share. All of these babies are turning 2-ish and so they're just becoming aware of Hi Point and what it means to come here. Bagels, cookies, hot cocoa, chalk, people to play with and they all have begun asking their parents with amazing forethought and planning to come to Hi Point. One little guy saw the bottle caps we gather to recycle going into the mini-van and he says, "Coffee?" He made his Mom promise that she wouldn't go to Hi Point without him! Another little guy has always been so shy, I don't think I've heard him say a word (I met him very early in his life) until one day last week I walked out of the kitchen and he yells my name, "Sarah!" clear as a bell and with great joy. What a gift! He's so dang cute as are all the little ones we've had the joy of watching grow since their beginnings. This is one of the great things of community, which is such an easy word to throw around, but really, truly does mean something and I have been deeply blessed by it. Which means I've been blessed by all of you! Thank you for all that you do and all you are. And I'm looking forward to seeing you soon! Sarah |

| Upcoming Events! Saturday February 11th 1-4pm Who wants to talk about 2012 weirdness? I do! Let's see how many other folks are interested, too! Come to Hi Point this Saturday and let's see if we can get a conversation going about what we think's going on this year. Nothing? World coming to an end? Salvation? What do you think? Or are you just curious and ready to learn, such as myself? Valentine's Swing Dance Saturday February 11th 7-11pm Hi Point will be serving our full menu at 7, if you'd like to start the evening with dinner. The lesson starts at 8, dance from 9 to 11. And we'll offer a Valentine's dessert buffet with pots de creme, cupcakes, chocolate dipped strawberries, etc. What a fun Valentine's adventure! The lesson and dance are FREE! Monday February 13th, 7:30-9:30pm (post yoga!) I love charades and yet folks just don't play it anymore. Perhaps that is for a reason, but I for one believe it's a sad state of affairs. So, let's play! I know a couple of you are totally down for this, so you must come. It would be funny and awkward to play alone, no? :) Mind, Body and Spirit Health Fair with Steamboat Hot Springs Saturday February 18th, 1-4pm Note that the day got moved to the 18th!! Healing practicioners from Steamboat Hot Springs will be at Hi Point to share in new approaches to alternative and energetic healing. They will be offering aura pictures and analysis, chair massages, as well as information on healing through crystals, essential oils, and bath salts. Plus, they'll be providing a mini (1/2 hour) seminar on healing with color, light and sound at 3:00pm. Deep Politics Forum Sunday February 19th, 1pm I've been threatening to start this gathering for a while and so it's time to get to it! Deep politics (to pull from the wiki page) "posits that in every culture and society there are facts which tend to be suppressed collectively, because of the social and psychological costs of not doing so." Which means...we're gonna talk about conspiracy theories! I'm totally fascinated by conspiracy, some of which I believe and some of which not so much. The question at hand for me is how do we really know something? We're confronted by so much information, much of which I believe are either lies or half truths mixed in with only a few nuggets of truth. So, why not gather and talk about it!? Book Club Saturday February 26th, 1pm "In the Garden of Beasts" Movie Night! Monday March 5th, 7:15pm Saturday March 10th, 1-4pm A gathering of astronomy buffs and newbies who are interested in discussing and sharing about astronomy as a hobby. |
Yoga Class at Hi Point! Monday, February 13th 5:30pm - 6:45pm Wednesday, February 15th 5:30pm - 6:45pm Yoga Monday and Wednesday nights. Bring your mat! Class is a $7 donation to Jelena. jelenahardy@gmail.com or 530.321.2886 Jelena's style of yoga is a dynamic flowing practice that allows the internal movement of the breath to carry the external movement of the body. As the life force (prana) is intensified and stilled, the physical practice becomes a dynamic form of meditation. Challenging the body and mind to find a balance between effort and receptivity imbues the physical practice with lightness and grace and maximizes one's power of conscious manifestation. This process of self-realization and unity with the divine is the essence of yoga. |
Painting! Here's the update on the painting situation. Grey is up and looks really beautiful. We've got the bright orange painted in the window sills. Now, we're waiting for the right moment to paint the bright orange flower/meadow mural on top of the grey and to paint the "tree of life" on the Eastern wall, between the orange chairs. We've got an artist already working on both of these walls, but as you know, painting is really the last step in the process. It's a pretty fun thing to see unfold! |
Upcoming Art Shows... Part of the whole painting Hi Point thing is to get ready to highlight local artists at Hi Point! We've always hung the work of local artists, but I've never had a good system for getting people's work up and rotating art once it is up there. I realized that one of the biggest reasons for my failure in that regard is that I was super uncomfortable with the idea of me being the one to say 'yeah or nay' to someone's work. Enter Ian and Shelby! Ian and Shelby will be our selection committee to rotate art every two months, most likely starting in April to give us time to get the murals completed. So, any interested artists should contact Ian Kahler (our esteemed photographer) at wispp@hotmail.com. He'll give you the low down on the process. Yeah! |
Other Activities at Hi Point! Gardening Group... OK, guys. I have a very rough idea floating in my head about a vegetable gardening group. The idea that's floating in my head involves creating a community-based farmer's market. You grow vegetables or fruit or even eggs, bring your excess to the "market" and get weighed in. You then get credit to trade with other farmers for what you bring. So, let's say you bring in 10lbs tomatoes, so therefore you can trade for 10lbs of something else in trade. What do you think? Could this work? I think it could be a blast, but I haven't got past the hypothetical stages as in, I haven't looked for the problems or the holes in my thinking. That's not the fun part of idea-making! ;) Anybody interested in fleshing out this idea with me? Could be very cool! Moms Group? I've received some interest in putting together a group for moms to gather, listen, support, share information and just have a good time together. Seeing as to how I do not have children, I'm not the ideal candidate to organize this. However, I'm putting this in here to hopefully catch someone's eye. Is there interest for this out there in Hi Point land? Would you like to lead this group? If so, let me know. There are moms out there who would love to gather, but may not trust themselves with the leadership role. Not that it would take much. Someone for me to call if I need to talk to you about a meeting time, really. Bring the kids, of course, and you can even rearrange furniture if it would suit the purpose of the group if we do it during a mid-week afternoon. Set the kids in the middle with chalk and let 'em go to town drawing on the floor! Whatever works for you. You tell me! :) Middle East Interest Group I'm also totally interested in the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There are a handful of you in the Hi Point community who have some real insight and experience to share on this subject and I (with the sage guidance of one of those someones) have decided to approach the subject through reading and discussing a novel called "The Damascus Gate" by Robert Stone. It is a thriller of sorts, but most importantly paints an accurate picture of the layers of history, religion and culture that set into motion the conflict as it is today. I think this is a wonderful approach to begin to understand to the complexities of this conflict and to begin a conversation about the Middle East and what really drives our (American) policy. Now, don't worry. I'm not the intellectual fire that will bring this book to life for us. That is the glory of my role, though. I know people who know far more than your average bear and who are willing to have a conversation that will rock your brain in your skull. So, if you find this subject interesting, get the book, get to reading and we'll set a date to discuss. And then we'll see where our interest take us. New Book Club Book! We've taken a book club hiatus, but we've selected a new book to read. Several of us have decided the book of choice this time around is "In the Garden of Beasts" by Eric Larson. It's written by the same guy who wrote "Devil in the White City", which was a fascinating read about the Chicago World's Fair and a mass murderer operating within the chaos of Chicago during that time. In the Garden of Beasts is a narrative non-ficiton, which means it reads like a novel but is in fact non-fiction. This current selection is about the American ambassador and his family in Nazi Germany in 1933. He witnesses the rise of fascism and calls the alarm while the US State Department is largely ignoring or underplaying the threat. It's a fascinating point in history written by a master. Meeting is set for Sunday February 26th, 1pm |
