News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 3/23/11

Snow. Really? Blue jays and forsythia are trying to come onto the scene and yet we still have snow galore coming. I tell you, I've never lived in such an exciting and strange weather place as Reno. Love it! But even I'm starting to wonder at when the sun will peak out again. I'm having flashbacks to my Seattle rain-fearing days. The sun will come back, the sun will come back. Say it with me now, all ye fellow SADD suffers out there! :)

Well, here's the scoop, folks...
We got Saturday dinner special of homemade asparagus ravioli (I've been dying to make pasta!), Sunday brunch special, new flavors of pretzels to try for Spring, a new book to start reading. And more. Lots of good music coming our way, too!

Oh, and a new "Wall of Fame" at the shop with some great photography of the folks of Hi Point, including some of you! Come check it out! Many thanks to Ian, whose photographic genius graces our walls! :)

Ta for now, but hopefully not for long! :)

Sunday Brunch

We're doing a simple, delicious and lighter brunch then last week. The Croque Madame's were great (we'll have them again for those you who missed out before it was gone!!), but it was dense. This week, we're going for tons of flavor, but ever so slightly fewer calories. :)

Sunday Menu
Poached eggs on focaccia toast smothered in garlicky mushrooms and spinach served with pepper maple-glazed bacon and mini strawberry shortcakes!

Saturday Night Music - The Willows!
7-9pm

The Willows is a co-project of Mig and Colin Ross. Colin is a well known musician and composer in Reno, who plays a "large and ever-shifting repertoire of original music, jazz standards and blues classics."

Mig brings her powerful and playful voice to the mix to create an exciting musical experience.

We're very pleased to welcome them to Hi Point this Saturday, 7pm. You can check out more on Colin at his website, including some recordings of his jazz, boogie, blues and more.http://www.colinrossmusic.com/NEW/Listen.html

Joe Craven at Hi Point!

For those of you who know Joe Craven, there is no necessary introduction. Joe Craven is coming in concert at Hi Point, April 30th 7-9pm!! We're selling tickets for only 40 seats at $20 a piece and we're almost sold out. So, this is your last minute opportunity to come in and get your name on the list to be one of the lucky 40 folks to sit and enjoy a magical evening. If you don't know who Joe Craven, here's some links to learn more about him...

There's only a handful of spaces left, but I would be remiss in my duties if I did not share the opportunity for you to grab one or two. So, don't hesitate! Come and down, cash or check would be appreciated for this one. Thanks!!

"...this stuff is SICK! (in the jaw-dropping, how-does-he-do-it sense, that is.) The only people who won't be dancing at the show are the musicians shaking their heads in the disbelief."
-Santa Cruz News and Entertainment Weekly "Good Times"

"Joe Craven's playing will make your jaw drop in wonder and amazement. He's a dazzling soloist, his virtuosity matched by his ability to swing."

Beer and Wine List - this week!

New this week, Flaco Tempranillo from the Madrid area of Spain

This is what the Vineyard Wine Shop has to say about this bottle...
"What a fun wine...full of vivid fruit tones of fresh red plums, blackberries, and little dabs of spice and earth, this is one of those reds you just need to have around the house, for lunch, for dinner, for friends, and even for in-laws."

I've tried it and it's a great sipping wine that I could easily see drinking all the time, with lots of different foods. Light, balanced and yet lots of flavor. And more importantly, it'll go nicely with our dinner on Saturday!

New Book for Book Club!
The Last Child in the Woods: Saving our children from nature-deficit disorder

In honor of Earth Day, we're reading a book about the importance of contact with Nature for our children from the point of view of a child advocacy expert. But how can it not be important for the rest of us? I know I start to go a little wiggy if I don't at least go for a walk every couple days. I'm looking forward to this book, though I know he'll be preachin' to the choir. :)

Here's what Publisher's Weekly has to say...
"Today's kids are increasingly disconnected from the natural world, says child advocacy expert Louv (Childhood's FutureFatherlove
; etc.), even as research shows that "thoughtful exposure of youngsters to nature can... be a powerful form of therapy for attention-deficit disorder and other maladies." Instead of passing summer months hiking, swimming and telling stories around thecampfire, children these days are more likely to attend computer camps or weight-loss camps: as a result, Louv says, they've come to think of nature as more of an abstraction than a reality. Indeed, a 2002 British study reported that eight-year-olds could identify Pokémon characters far more easily than they could name "otter, beetle, and oak tree." Gathering thoughts from parents, teachers, researchers, environmentalists and other concerned parties, Louv argues for a return to an awareness of and appreciation for the natural world. Not only can nature teach kids science and nurture their creativity, he says, nature needs its children: where else will its future stewards come from? Louv's book is a call to action, full of warnings-but also full of ideas for change."
