News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 3/31/11

Ack! No time to do this newsletter justice today, which brings me to a point I very much wanted to bring up. Our beloved barista Justice is leaving to go back to Truckee and his last day is tomorrow (Friday). He'll be there all afternoon til close, so this is your opportunity to come wish him well. :) It's always sad to send our folks off into the world, but change is necessary and good, particularly for the young and I wish him the very best the world has to offer. Thank you, Justice! :)

As I mentioned, time is short. I've got choir practice with the Reno Baroque Ensemble tonight and dinner to eat, so I'll bid you a very good night!

Ta! :)
Sarah

Here's what the Reno News and Review has to say about Justin...
"In any artistic endeavor it can be difficult to simply let go and let the art, the emotion, tell the story. But McMahon seems to accomplish this, gripping the listener from track to track with engaging storytelling that doesn't let go."
-Gabriel Traverso

This promises to be a great show, so I hope to see you on Saturday!

Upcoming Shows...

We have a few big concerts coming up on our Saturday night concert series!! Reno's own Nothing Like a Dame is on April 23rd, plus I believe three more national touring bands coming in May. For these shows we will be selling reservations like we did for Joe Craven. This model seems to work well and given our space restrictions, this will be the best way to make sure the people who want to see the shows will be gauranteed space. So, NLAD tickets are on sale now for $5 and I'll be updating you on the next acts, starting next week. Stay tuned! It's very exciting stuff on the way. I could hardly believe my little ears when I heard who's coming. :)

Joe Craven at Hi Point!

Joe's show is sold out, but if you are interested in seeing him, send me an email and tell me to put you on the list in case we bring Joe back for an encore performance. We sold out so quickly, we're thinking there might be plenty of interest for a second appearance later this summer. :)
Open Mic Night

New Book for Book Club!
The Last Child in the Woods: Saving our children from nature-deficit disorder

In honor of Earth Day, we're reading a book about the importance of contact with Nature for our children from the point of view of a child advocacy expert. But how can it not be important for the rest of us? I know I start to go a little wiggy if I don't at least go for a walk every couple days. I'm looking forward to this book, though I know he'll be preachin' to the choir. :)

Here's what Publisher's Weekly has to say...
"Today's kids are increasingly disconnected from the natural world, says child advocacy expert Louv (Childhood's FutureFatherlove
; etc.), even as research shows that "thoughtful exposure of youngsters to nature can... be a powerful form of therapy for attention-deficit disorder and other maladies." Instead of passing summer months hiking, swimming and telling stories around thecampfire, children these days are more likely to attend computer camps or weight-loss camps: as a result, Louv says, they've come to think of nature as more of an abstraction than a reality. Indeed, a 2002 British study reported that eight-year-olds could identify Pokémon characters far more easily than they could name "otter, beetle, and oak tree." Gathering thoughts from parents, teachers, researchers, environmentalists and other concerned parties, Louv argues for a return to an awareness of and appreciation for the natural world. Not only can nature teach kids science and nurture their creativity, he says, nature needs its children: where else will its future stewards come from? Louv's book is a call to action, full of warnings-but also full of ideas for change."
