The Hi Points from Hi Point Coffee 11/11/10

Happy Veteran's Day!
For all of you with the day off, I hope you're enjoying the day and taking the opportunity to thank the vets in your life. And thank you to all of you who have served or are military families, who do your own kind of service!

Some of you may be wondering about the absence of the email last week. Sorry!! The time to write never seemed to arrive. However, I am coming to the slow realization that I am the common denominator in the chaos that is my life. And so I'm restructuring my world to get in control of my desk, my home, my exercise routines, etc. It's the sorta thing you're supposed to do in Spring, but as I see the holidays loom, I'm afraid all the extra activities of the season would begin to feel like a hurricane. I know all y'all have been in the same situation at one time or another and a few of you are nodding your heads, thinking about your own hurricanes. What crazy lives we lead! This is all a long preamble to say that my hours at the shop are going to be changing, but good things will be hopefully coming of this, too. Like the newsletter being on time and accurate. It's exciting stuff!

We have a lot of fun stuff going on this weekend, so please check it out and I hope to see you soon!!

Saturday Music!

Saturday 1:30pm to 3L30pm

Free music on Saturday featuring Reno's own Chicago Todd.
He has a wonderful, thoughtful style on acoustic guitar. Absolutely perfect for an autumn afternoon. Check out some of his videos on his site and come in for a listen. I always love to listen, so I'm glad I'll be there. However, I'll be working and not sitting with a cool glass of somethin'.

Poets Invade Hi Point!

Saturday evening, 6-8pm
Writer's workshop before the event at 5pm!

Ben Arnold leads a wonderful event at Hi Point featuring three professional poets from the Reno/Tahoe area. They take turns in reading and sharing their thoughts on poetry, writing and the artists' life. It's a wonderful event with alternatively funny, touching, wise and thoughtful words to lift you up. This month's event is particularly special with a workshop in advance of the event at 5pm. Come one, come all!

New Book Club Selection

New book club book!!
"UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record" by Leslie Kean
While you may find the UFO of dubious interest, I've already read this one, thanks to my crazy Dad. Thanks, Dad! Anyway, it's UFO stories mainly told by the generals, pilots and officials who have dealt first hand with UFOs, including the story of a fighter pilot in a dog fight with a UFO. Best story of the book. Call me crazy (and I know some of you do already, it's ok), but I found this book to be fascinating. Impressively, this book has positive reviews from Michio Kaku (for the fellow amateur physics geeks out there) and multiple PhD Ivy-league scientists. It's written for folks who do not believe in UFOs, such as me. After reading the book, I can honestly say, I'm a reluctant believer that something unexplained is happening (or at minimum, has happened) and am fascinated by the possibilities. It's a worth a read, even if you don't want to admit to actually reading a UFO book. You can always tell people you're simply doing an anthropological study. ;) Whatever your motivation, read it and come discuss! The date is TBD.
