News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 2/23/11

Hola!
Do you find the sun here to be sometimes misleading? It's absolutely stunning outside, but also so stunningly chilly! Best to not get too attached to it anyway, 'cause the snow is on its way. Despite the trouble snow brings, I love its nurturing blanket around my plants and trees at home, slowly feeding water to the roots that will need it soon enough. Spring is in the air, despite the chill and I'm gettin' ready. Woot! Asparagus for Sunday, urban gardening book for our next book club. Alas, it's still freezing, so tuna hot dish for Saturday night. :)

Also, I just have to point out that it's Wednesday and I'm writing my letter! I'm feeling the glow of a minor victory right now, 'cause I'm writing my letter on the day I intend, but never actually do. We all have to savor the little achievements in life, no? So, I hope you are also finding and savoring little achievements in your day, too!

Looking forward to seeing you again,
Sarah
Saturday Dinner Special - Tuna Hot Dish

We're goin' old school for Saturday! My favorite dish ever on the planet, Tuna Hot Dish. However, Hi Point's won't feature Velveeta, like we had as kids. This will have sharp cheddar melted in a roux sauce with sauteed mushrooms, onions, herbs and sherry. Despite all the fanciness, though, it will be baked with crumbled potato chips on top! :) Served with some sort of vegetable/salad, 'cause Mom would want it that way. I promise to make it taste good, though!  Served Saturday, starting at 6pm.

Sunday Brunch

Despite the snow, it's time to start looking forward to Spring, no? And that could only mean one thing...asparagus!

Sunday Brunch Menu
Asparagus and leek deep-dish quiche served with cheddar biscuits and my favorite glazed bacon on the side!

We'll also have our regular breakfast menu, served all day!

Saturday Music! 7pm-9pm
Mel Wade and Kristin Lagasse

Hi Point is featuring two great singer/songwriters this Saturday evening! I hope you take a moment to listen to Mel's and Kristin's music on their ReverbNation sites. They are both enchanting folk musicians and will truly make a great evening of music.

Mel Wade
Mel Wade's music has been described as: Pure, unadulterated folk. Mel's songs are lyrically intriguing and sweet in their melodic composition. Reminiscent of the grassroots folk movement of the 1960s, Wade has garnered comparisons to both Natalie Merchant and Judy Collins. Receiving accolades locally and nationally, Mel recently performed at Nashville's famous, "Bluebird Cafe."

Kristin's
"Kristin Lagasse is no ordinary singer/songwriter, she writes songs from her heart. Her angelic voice combined with the sweet sound of her custom-made ukulele will touch your soul like a bittersweet love letter. Her new song, "Even So" on her upcoming new Album entitled, Gypsy Girl, speaks of love in an uncertain world through melodic and soothing tones. "Even So" makes you believe that true love is indeed unconditional. "

Book Club Meeting
The book for this month is Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer! If you love Michael Pollan, are curious about urban homesteading or just dig gardening and all things food related, this book is right up your alley. It's right up mine, I can tell you that! Just in time to find inspiration for our spring gardening. :) The next meeting is set for Sunday March 20th, 2pm.

Check out the review from Publisher's Weekly...
"In this utterly enchanting book, food writer Carpenter chronicles with grace and generosity her experiences as an urban farmer. With her boyfriend Bill's help, her squatter's vegetable garden in one of the worst parts of the Bay Area evolved into further adventures in bee and poultry keeping in the desire for such staples as home-harvested honey, eggs and home-raised meat. The built-in difficulties also required dealing with the expected noise and mess as well as interference both human and animal. When one turkey survived to see, so to speak, its way to the Thanksgiving table, the success spurred Carpenter to rabbitry and a monthlong plan to eat from her own garden. Consistently drawing on her Idaho ranch roots and determined even in the face of bodily danger, her ambitions led to ownership and care of a brace of pigs straight out of E.B. White. She chronicles the animalsÖ slaughter with grace and sensitivity, their cooking and consumption with a gastronomeÖs passion, and elegantly folds in riches like urban farming history. Her way with narrative and details, like the oddly poetic names of chicken and watermelon breeds, gives her memoir an Annie Dillard lyricism, but itÖs the juxtaposition of the farming life with inner-city grit that elevates it to the realm of the magical."
Drive for warm stuff!

Bring me your tired, your poor, your neglected warm clothing Yearning to serve the needy,
Your scarves and mittens of your teeming closets
Send these, the happy warm clothes that have served you well
To the collection box next to our front door.

This is to say...we're still collecting your gently used warm clothing to take to the Record St. shelter!! I've almost got a load together and yet another storm on the way, so if you have something, I hope you bring it down. :)

PS. You can read the original poem here, if you're curious. I'm not in anyway claiming to be a poet or trying to fool your into thinking that I didn't just shamelessly muddle the wonderful poem on the Statue of Liberty. :)
