News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 6/16/11

Hola!

Well, in the scheme of things, this is a big week. It was our second anniversary this past Monday and I can't believe I forgot to mention it. There's always so much going on, so much to do, fun things to make and serve, I really do forget to stop and smell the roses. Two years is a big deal, especially for a location that was somewhat "doomed", in an economy that is still a total bear. Geez! Two years! So, I have to stop and say thank you to all of you who are our cheerleaders, our best marketing team, our sources of wisdom and joy and grace...and our bread and butter. It is a miracle of a dream to still be open, growing and getting more crazy, involved and creative as the days roll by. Thank you for that. I am so grateful for you and the joy of getting to know you. Thank you for all you do and all you are. So very cool to have our little community! Thank you. :)

In the theme of community, let us discuss the happenings of the weekend. No evening events this weekend, unless you are coming to the Saturday private party. We're booked. :) So, we will be closing to the public at 4pm both Friday and Saturday, but I hope you check out who's playing next week. Got the info on that down below!

One more week for book club, so you can still skim the important sections and come for a chat next Sunday.

AND...Most importantly, it is Father's Day this weekend!! Father's Day is so much fun because of the bacon theme. So many incarnations of bacon in one breakfast, plus $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon all day. I thought about doing the special pricing just for the dads, but it's a lot more fun to do dollar beers for everyone! :) Plus, a couple new wines to check out, but those are oddly not a $1. So sorry. ;)

Alright folks, time to cut myself off. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart and from my staff, as well. I know you are important to many of us and not just me. Cheers!

Hope it's a wonderful weekend and hope to see you very soon!

Father's Day Brunch!
Served 9am - 2pm

It's all about Dad and bacon. Consequently, one of the best days of the year! :) Three-courses, each including an excess of bacon, used in its many spectacular forms; sweet, spicy, savory and surprising.
To start, we're serving summer fresh nectarines, roasted and wrapped in bacon and fresh basil along with crystallized ginger scones and homemade strawberry freezer jam. For the entree, we have poached eggs served with creamy bacon and sharp cheddar grits, a serving of our famous glazed bacon and an iceberg wedge salad. (You gotta eat something green, even if it is your day, Dad!) Dessert is our homemade vanilla ice cream, topped with a sprinkle of brown sugar candied bacon, roasted walnuts and a drizzle of fresh spiced rum caramel sauce.

The menu is so complicated, it's practically a dissertation! But, a dissertation full of love. It's different.  I tried to work beer into a coffee drink for Dad's day this year. Tried. Failed. However, this year we're serving a very fresh watermelon water included with brunch and $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon all day. Now, being good fathers, you may not want to indulge, but that's not our call. We're just here with the beer and the bacon, 'cause it's your day!! Yeah for dads! :)
Music this Saturday?

In a word, no.

We don't have anything going on on Friday, for the first time in ever. Still working on new plans for open mic stuff and that's coming together pretty well. Stay tuned. :) One little hint, though...I'm a classical music lover and we're working on maybe putting together a classical open mic or at least some classical music at Hi Point. Don't know how yet, but it's gonna be wonderful.

And Saturday, we are closed to host a very fun private party. So, both Friday and Saturday, we'll be closed at 4pm. Hopefully this will encourage you to make it to Father's Day Brunch!

Next week, we're hosting a very cool artist from Salt Lake City, Mary Tebbs with the opening band of Reno's own Marten's Platform! Tickets are on sale now online for $5, plus a $1 processing fee.

"Mary Tebbs has been called "The Ellen DeGeneres of singer/songwriters" and for good reason! Her off-the-cuff, quick-witted and endearing performance style will have you laughing in one moment and then she'll surprise you with a lyrical depth and wisdom that will have you embracing each melodic word."

"When in song, these voices ring out equally pure and clear--soft at first, then rising into a powerful alto harmony." - RN&R

Together, they'll make for a very solid night of music!!

And as usual, we've got lots of upcoming shows. Check it out at our events calendar at HiPointCoffee.com/Events

Beer and Wine List

Two new wines this week, plus the great addition of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. But, that doesn't need description. :)

Belasco de Baquedano Rosa  - Malbec
"This rosé is crafted from our finest Malbec grapes, and like the flower it is named for (the elegant rose), bursts with beauty and freshness. It is a "must try" - a rare find of bright red ruby color. This well-structured wine boasts lavish cherries, ripe raspberries and strawberries on the nose and in the mouth, with a stylish and crisp finish."

and...

Le Lapin Paso Robles - Multiplicity
Multiplicity is a blended red wine from the Paso Robles area and the Rabbit Ridge Winery. A nicely fruit forward wine with raspbery, plus and American sweet oak, but with enough acids to be interesting and full of depth. This is a very sip-able wine to me. See how I suffer for you that I have to test this stuff out? :)

New Book to Read!

One more week til book club!! Time to get to reading. :

We're reading "A Place of My Own" by Michael Pollan. I've loved his other books, including Omnivore's Dilemma. He's an absolute genius, as far as I'm concerned, and so I'm super excited about this book. It is an examination of the spaces we inhabit and creating spaces that are meaningful. I know I've had fantasies of a little cabin or space that is my own for the day I grow up and become a writer. haha! I used to want to be a writer, anyway. Right now, a space of my own would become a place to play solitaire, but I'd be a happy little clam playing solitaire in my cabin!

So...call to action, all ye would be book club members. Now is the time to go get the book and start reading! And then join us to discuss June 26th, 2pm!

Here's the description of the book from Pollan's website...

A Place of My Own: The Architecture of Daydreams

"A room of one's own: is there anybody who hasn't at one time or another wished for such a place, hasn't turned those soft words over until they'd assumed a habitable shape?"

When writer Michael Pollan decided to plant a garden, the result was an award-winning treatise on the borders between nature and contemporary life, the acclaimed bestseller Second Nature. Now Pollan turns his sharp insight to the craft of building, as he recounts the process of designing and constructing a small one-room structure on his rural Connecticut property-a place in which he hoped to read, write and daydream, built with his two own unhandy hands.
Invoking the titans of architecture, literature and philosophy, from Vitrivius to Thoreau, from the Chinese masters of feng shui to the revolutionary Frank Lloyd Wright, Pollan brilliantly chronicles a realm of blueprints, joints and trusses as he peers into the ephemeral nature of "houseness" itself. From the spark of an idea to the search for a perfect site to the raising of a ridgepole, Pollan revels in the infinitely detailed, complex process of creating a finished structure. At once superbly written, informative and enormously entertaining, A Place of My Own is for anyone who has ever wondered how the walls around us take shape-and how we might shape them ourselves.

A Place of My Own recounts his two-and-a-half-year journey of discovery in an absorbing narrative that deftly weaves the day-to-day work of design and building-from siting to blueprint, from the pouring of foundations to finish carpentry-with reflections on everything from the power of place to shape our lives to the question of what constitutes "real work" in a technological society.
