News from Hi Point Coffee and Cafe 6/1/11

The weather is so stinky, it's become boring to keep commenting on the fact that it snowed this week. At least we haven't had a tornado. You know what? That's the new silver lining and I think I'll run with that one for a while! I've officially cheered myself up. :)

OK, folks, the quick run down for activities this weekend. We have music this Friday, instead of Saturday. We really wanted Dave Berry of Jelly Bread to come play and this is what he had. We'll take it! Dave is a wonderful musician and takes a departure from the funk of Jelly Bread to contemplative yet edgy blues. Very cool. Check out the links below. Sunday brunch, of course. And? That's about it. It's so bleepin' cold, though, you might as well check out the new book club book and get to reading. I've even heard of a fun coffee shop/cafe in town that's nice to read in. In your neighborhood. Called Hi Point. Ever hear of it? :)

Thanks y'all for being so very cool and fun to know. Hope to see you soon!!

Live music this Friday!!

Dave Berry from Jelly Bread plays tonight at Hi Point! 7pm!

"Dave is the primary songwriter, band leader, guitarist and lead vocalist of the band Jelly Bread... but has a solo career on the side. Dave started out with just himself and a couple guitars, and likes to dave berryretreat to that personal safe haven every now and then. Incorporating acoustic & electric guitars, a dobro, electric piano and other key arrangments, his solo music is the polar opposite of the upbeat jams of Jelly Bread. "I need the diversity, I'm bi-polar after all" he quips. Influenced by artists like Damien Rice, Ben Harper & Ray LaMontagne, Dave has won awards and gained national attention with his heartfelt "etherial folk" style of songwriting and composing. Chosen by a panel of judges as the "2009 Best of Reno songwriter of the year" and having toured extensively on the west coast, Dave's solo career has proved to be the perfect balance to his funk and jam filled career with Jelly Bread."

Check out the links to his music here!

Lots of upcoming shows! Check it out at our events calendar atHiPointCoffee.com/Events

Open Mic

Hi Point's open mic has been hosted by Lenny, aka El Bajo, with great love and care for the past several months. With all the music coming through Hi Point, I've decided to move Open Mic night to Thursdays to ensure consistent scheduling for our open mic crew and unfortunately this does not work for Lenny. It's a very sad thing to report, but Lenny has decided to not move to Thursdays and will be looking for a new venue to host his Friday open mic. We will still be moving our open mic to Thursdays, so stay tuned on upcoming details. We have some interest already in hosts, etc., so this event is not going away. Just morphing a little bit and unfortunately will not have Lenny at the helm. I wish him the best in his new adventures! Thank you, Lenny!

New Book to Read!

We're reading "A Place of My Own" by Michael Pollan. I've loved his other books, including Omnivore's Dilemma. He's an absolute genius, as far as I'm concerned, and so I'm super excited about this book. It is an examination of the spaces we inhabit and creating spaces that are meaningful. I know I've had fantasies of a little cabin or space that is my own for the day I grow up and become a writer. haha! I used to want to be a writer, anyway. Right now, a space of my own would become a place to play solitaire, but I'd be a happy little clam playing solitaire in my cabin!

So...call to action, all ye would be book club members. Now is the time to go get the book and start reading! And then join us to discuss June 26th, 2pm!

Here's the description of the book from Pollan's website...

A Place of My Own: The Architecture of Daydreams

"A room of one's own: is there anybody who hasn't at one time or another wished for such a place, hasn't turned those soft words over until they'd assumed a habitable shape?"

When writer Michael Pollan decided to plant a garden, the result was an award-winning treatise on the borders between nature and contemporary life, the acclaimed bestseller Second Nature. Now Pollan turns his sharp insight to the craft of building, as he recounts the process of designing and constructing a small one-room structure on his rural Connecticut property-a place in which he hoped to read, write and daydream, built with his two own unhandy hands.
Invoking the titans of architecture, literature and philosophy, from Vitrivius to Thoreau, from the Chinese masters of feng shui to the revolutionary Frank Lloyd Wright, Pollan brilliantly chronicles a realm of blueprints, joints and trusses as he peers into the ephemeral nature of "houseness" itself. From the spark of an idea to the search for a perfect site to the raising of a ridgepole, Pollan revels in the infinitely detailed, complex process of creating a finished structure. At once superbly written, informative and enormously entertaining, A Place of My Own is for anyone who has ever wondered how the walls around us take shape-and how we might shape them ourselves.

A Place of My Own recounts his two-and-a-half-year journey of discovery in an absorbing narrative that deftly weaves the day-to-day work of design and building-from siting to blueprint, from the pouring of foundations to finish carpentry-with reflections on everything from the power of place to shape our lives to the question of what constitutes "real work" in a technological society.
